The Town of Nassau’s Farm and Agriculture Preservation Committee is pleased to announce a competition to identify the largest and oldest trees in the Town of Nassau. This friendly competition will foster the competitiveness of residents and recognize the value of the rural character and beauty of the Town of Nassau.
Nassau is home to numerous massive trees from several species. Many of these historic trees are along farm properties and in wind breaks which help to prevent erosion and delineate fields located throughout the Town. They also protect fields from wind damage and encourage wildlife. These large trees and their forested areas surrounding Nassau’s farms also encourage bird populations which eat field insect pests.
This competition will help to recognize the value of these trees and to honor the preservation of our rural open space.
The Farm and Ag Committee is also inviting children in area school districts to participate in the competition. The fall and winter months provide an excellent opportunity for residents to get outdoors and appreciate all the beauty of Nassau. It also makes it easier to spot large trees.
This tree competition will begin November 15 and continue to May 6, 2013. A copy of the identification form for this effort may be found on the Town’s website at www.townofnassau.org. Please remember to ask permission of the property owner if a tree you are interested in is not located on your property.
The Town of Nassau’s Farm and Agriculture Preservation Committee was created to act as a liaison between the agriculture community and the Town.
New members and program suggests for the Committee are always welcome. You may contact the Committee at farms@townofnassau.org.
